On Location
On-Set Production Crews Across South Africa
Here is how this works in practice. South Africa's production scene spans Johannesburg's urban interiors and Sandton commercial zones, Cape Town's diverse coastal and mountain locations, and the dramatic open terrain of the Karoo and the Drakensberg. Our production crews deploy across all these environments, arriving with the technical infrastructure to handle tricky shoots efficiently. We set up camera, sound, lighting, and grip at once, managing the day-to-day rhythm of the set so that your director and talent can focus on performance and creative decisions without being drawn into logistical problem-solving.
Crews sized to the project, not a template β lean enough to move fast through Joburg, technical enough for high-end work in the Karoo.
Here is the short of it. Camera & Cinematography is delivered by skilled DPs who know how South Africa's intense natural light and different backdrops shape cinematic choices. For aerial coverage over locations such as the Cape Peninsula or Kruger National Park, our Drone Videography teams hold the relevant permits and operate safely within airspace rules. Productions needing fluid movement rely on our Steadicam & Gimbal operators, while our Gaffer & Lighting Team manages tricky multi-source setups for studio and location work alike throughout the country.
FAQs
Production FAQs
Common questions about our production services, crew availability, and equipment support.
What crew sizes can you provide for productions in South Africa?
The production team handles projects which range from two-person documentary production to 150-person feature unit operations. The typical range for commercial production shoots includes 15 to 30 personnel who consist of a DP and camera team and gaffer with two electrics and key grip with a swing and sound mixer and boom op and additional staff from art department and HMU. We've crewed up Netflix series with full South African units and handled single-day corporate interviews with just a shooter and audio. The network scales to fit.
How quickly can you mobilize a crew in South Africa?
Pretoria-based crew can often mobilize within 24β48 hours for urgent jobsβwe've pulled together same-day news crews when stories break. Regional shoots need more runway; figure 5β7 days minimum for locations outside major cities. The real constraint is usually equipment availability from rental houses, not crew. If you're planning ahead, 2β3 weeks gives us time to assemble the right team rather than just the available one.
Do your crews speak English?
The department heads who include DPs and gaffers and sound mixers and 1st ADs possess English fluency and have worked on productions outside their home country. That's a baseline requirement for our network. Grips, electrics, and PAs vary, but we always ensure someone on each team can translate. For fully South African-speaking shoots, we have native crews across every department.
Can you provide equipment along with crew?
We work with TSF, Panavision Pretoria, RVZ, and other South African rental houses daily. The majority of equipment packages include crew members who stay with their assigned positions because the gaffer operates from their preferred lighting location and the DP selects the camera equipment. Our company takes care of customs procedures and carnet documentation for international productions which choose to bring their own equipment. The delivery of equipment brings tested and prepared equipment to the site; we begin our work.'t send gear to set without a checkout.
How do South African crew rates compare to other countries?
South African rates are significantly lower than UK and US levels, offering excellent value for international productions. The favorable exchange rate is a major advantage. We quote all-in costs so there are no surprises. For qualifying productions, the DTI Film & TV Production Incentive can offset 25% of qualifying South African spend, which makes South Africa highly competitive globally.
