South Africa's lighting departments are built around a deep crew base at Cape Town Film Studios and rental inventories that carry full HMI, tungsten and LED packages for international features and high-end commercials.

Here is how this works in practice. We assemble gaffers and lighting teams for South Africa productions, pairing skilled heads of department with electricians, best boys and lighting technicians drawn from the country's mature film-services industry. Our gaffers join the production early, working with the DP on lighting plans, power budgets and rigging schedules, then crew and equip the department through South Africa's well-stocked rental houses. This carry HMI, tungsten, fluorescent and the newest LED fixtures alongside distribution, dimming and rigging hardware.

Here is the short of it. Cape Town Film Studios provides stage space with the infrastructure for large interior builds, while our crews are as well at home rigging on location across the Western Cape and beyond. Because mains power runs at 230V/50Hz and grid supply can be variable, we plan generator self-sufficiency into every lighting package, sizing silent generators and distribution to the production. From night exteriors in the bushveld to controlled stage interiors, our lighting teams deliver consistent, well-managed setups, and the country's competitive rates mean a full department can be resourced locally without importing personnel.

Here is the breakdown. South Africa's natural light is one of the country's greatest production assets. Lighting teams here work to complement rather than fight it. The Western Cape's Mediterranean climate brings dry, sunny summers from November to February, the prime production season, with the strong, clear Southern Hemisphere light that has drawn shoots for decades. That said, productions still rely on full lighting departments for interiors, night work and shaping daylight across locations as different as the Bo-Kaap, the Karoo, the Cape Winelands and the Kruger bushveld.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. English is the working language of the lighting crew, ATA carnets are accepted for any imported fixtures, and the SAST time zone at UTC+2 aligns with European schedules. The DTIC production rebates, historically a rebate of around 25 percent of qualifying local spend for foreign productions, together with the favourable rand exchange rate, makes gear-heavy lighting setups notably cost-good. Studio productions such as 'Black Sails' and 'Raised by Wolves' at Cape Town Film Studios show the scale of lighting work the country routinely supports.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, coordinate equipment, and ensure safe power distribution throughout the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department includes: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and equipment), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger productions, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and equipment are typically separate. We can coordinate equipment packages from South African rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal equipment for smaller productions.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium productions typically need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger productions require full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are experienced working with international cinematographers and understand international terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are fluent English South African-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We coordinate generator hire and distribution equipment through our rental partners. Generator operators can be included in crew packages for productions requiring significant power infrastructure.

Productions in South Africa that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
